Pregnancy & Addiction

Maternal substance use sits at the intersection of obstetrics, neonatology, addiction medicine and child welfare. The session covers MOUD continuity during pregnancy (buprenorphine vs methadone), neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) management with Eat-Sleep-Console, breastfeeding considerations on long-acting buprenorphine, alcohol and tobacco cessation in pregnancy, and the post-partum relapse window with its elevated overdose risk. Discussion includes the 2024 ACOG guidance on OUD-in-pregnancy, the role of doulas and recovery-aware perinatal care, the cardio-obstetric coordination model, and the legal landscape after Dobbs that complicates substance-use disclosure in pregnant patients across multiple US states.
