Co-occurring Mental Illness

Dual-diagnosis care integrates addiction treatment with management of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis and personality disorders. The session covers integrated treatment models (vs sequential or parallel), antidepressant pharmacotherapy in SUD, bipolar mood-stabiliser choices in MAT patients, the schizophrenia-cannabis link, suicide-risk reduction in dual diagnosis, and the no-wrong-door pathway adopted by 2025 SAMHSA standards. Discussion includes KarXT (Cobenfy) in patients with comorbid SUD, ketamine and esketamine cautions in addiction-prone populations, the Zero Suicide framework integration in MAT clinics, and the workforce implications of credentialing addiction-psychiatrists who can manage both axes.
